Abstract:
The roadrunners, also known as chaparral birds or chaparral cocks, are two species of fast-running ground cuckoos with long tails and crests. The most famous bird in the southwest featured in folklore and cartoons, known for its long tail and expressive crest. The Roadrunner walks and runs on the ground, flying only when necessary. It can run 15 miles per hour, probably with much faster spurts when chasing a fast-running lizard or other prey. They are found in the southwestern and south-central United States and Mexico, usually in the desert. Although not known to attack humans, roadrunners eat whatever they find and can be extremely aggressive. The roadrunner is one of the few birds fast enough to capture and kill a rattlesnake. Greater roadrunners live year-round in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, and southern California. They can be seen in deserts, brush, and grasslands on the ground or sitting on low perches, such as fences. Predators of roadrunners are raccoons, hawks, and, of course, coyotes
